  • Details – St Paul’s School project is a new build project consisting of a concrete frame which will incorporate the schools new science building, the construction of this building for our client Mace had to be undertaken whilst the school was still open and the works were in and around other operational buildings and facilities. The science block has been designed by leading architect Nicholas Hare Associates, with Nicholas Hare being personally involved in the project to ensure the architectural vision was realized. The ambition was that the concrete frame would be mainly left exposed, as such all concrete surface finishes were specified as visual concrete to an exceptionally high standard. The colonnade at ground level was expressed to have pre-cast columns and pre-cast vaulted soffits, the vaulted soffits proved to be very challenging structurally where a permanent works design had to be devised between our site team and the structural engineers to provide a suitably robust connection detail to the slab above which the vaults were to hang off, along with this a temporary works solution had to be designed by the site team to support the vaults for when they were craned into position and held until the slab over was constructed.
For the rest of the building which comprised the classrooms and laboratories, the columns and classroom ceilings are left exposed. This required our site team and temporary works department to design the falsework, including a decking ply pattern layout, which was geometrically coordinated with the structure to give an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
