T6, designed by leading architecture firm Glenn Howells Architects, will be 14 storeys high for the most part, rising to 27 storeys at one end and will deliver 657 student bedrooms.

The accommodation will be developed by urbanest UK, with main contractor Mansell Construction Services Limited.

It is expected to be ready for occupation for the 2013/14 academic year.

The building will create a strong urban marker within ‘Zone T’ at the northern end of the 67 acre Kings Cross Argent development site. It will wrap around a new courtyard space at ground level which will be open to the public and will contain seating, planting and public art.

Inside there will be a mixture of cluster flats and self-contained studios, with some commercial space at ground level. The building is designed to be highly sustainable, aiming to achieve major carbon savings and a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The building is being constructed as a concrete frame, all elements are traditional reinforced concrete. Atlantic contracts scope for the building project was ground works, below ground drainage and the concrete frame.

The concrete frame has been constructed using proprietary formwork and falsework systems, along with our Peri Trio formwork for all vertical elements supplied by our in house plant hire company Glencoe Plant. We constructed the suspended floor slabs using our Peri Skydeck system, this system was utilized as we required a rapid recycling of the system and did not want to be crane dependant.

The project is situated adjacent to the High Speed 1(HS1) and Eurostar train lines, and it shares its boundary with them. With this close proximity to the international rail line protection from any falling or blown material debris was a conditional precedent, this lead to us proposing to use a perimeter edge protection screen to the railway elevation of the building. Following a review of the screen systems available at the time, we concluded that none of them would provide the level of protection that would be required. We therefore in conjunction with RMD Kwikform who designed and developed a new screen system, used this new screen system on the project which utilized a plastic sheeted facing to the screen which prevented not only material but small debris from being blown through it.
